The produce at normal (fka middle class) grocery stores goes bad much faster now Bought a box of organic strawberries yesterday, and a few were already covered with mold this morning Rarely happens with produce from upper class stores (eg. Whole Foods). Yet another way the growing class disparity is felt (but hidden)

does the freshness of the fruits correlate with quality though? what if the middle class grocery stores actually have fruits that contain much less preservatives agents, thus mold faster

i love TJs but if you're shopping at TJ's for produce, their produce has always been at best inconsistent and at worst bad (except for bananas). unfort many theories and guides written on this for the past few years.

Can you take it back? I’ve had my fair share of strawberries going bad pretty quickly but never that bad. Seems like it was already about to go bad while it was on shelf. (Which happens often at Kroger)

Yes, where I live (industrial urban area) it’s almost impossible to get good produce now. We don’t even have a Whole Foods near me. And even the “farmer’s market” stores are not selling local produce. It’s just become the reality that only about 1/2 of what I buy is gonna be edible ☹️ A few years ago I learned about how produce auctions work. And this explained so much. Produce imports arrive at a big distribution warehouse, where they are bid on by suppliers from the different chains. The produce is separated by quality. And all the upper class chains bid higher to get the high quality produce

Produce that we purchase at Whole Foods goes bad 2x faster than produce we purchase at Star Market — would you consider Star Market upper class?

It's not a conspiracy theory. I've been noticing the same thing. I try to get more produce from the farmers' markets due to this drop in quality. Have you seen the tricks stores use to make it look like food is fresh? Terrifying...

Gotta handle produce after purchasing so it lasts longer Eg soaking strawberries in water + baking soda before drying + storing in the fridge

always been like that in Germany Lidl and Aldi got the shit veggies, organic stores get the expensive but fresh stuff. It‘s not only how fresh. You can taste organically grow. It literally tastes fuller of nutrients

The weather in California (where most produce for the US comes from) is much more temperamental than a decade a go. Having grown up around farm fields and tending to fruit trees I can tell you it is only going to get worse

Fresh berries are cost prohibitive for many families at any store, Whole Foods or other. The divide is not between those who buy them at WF vs other but those who buy them and those who do not Walmart often has the freshest produce because they have the most efficient supply chain

Strawberries and raspberries always seem to turn fastest, thankfully my kids usually destroy them before they come close lol I seem to have better luck and prices with Aldi or Lidl produce, possibly bc of smaller stock/quicker restocks. When I get them at the bigger stores (Publix and Kroger where I am) they turn quicker maybe bc I wait til they’re on sale which likely means they’re clearing out the last of a shipment before they turn.
