hi everyone! feedback please! I'm trying to write out all the problems that /humankind solves.. but not sure which one to narrow in on. Any of these speak to you? If so, which ones? If not, what else speaks to you?

People are really sensitive right now to artificial everything. We are being bombarded with how many things in our life are toxic and we didn’t know. Microplastics, food dyes, etc. I love brands that are embracing basics and “real” over synthetic and cheaper. I don’t worry about what toxins I’m breathing in when I light your candles. I cringe thinking about what I’ve inhaled in the past and how many glade plugins I’ve used.

my ex did candles for my friends and only accepted orders personally (no website, no ads, no marketing) what people really like about it is the intention: every candle was made for them, them knowing she knows them not really possible at certain scale but the need for personalization of a sacred ritual which is candle burning is there

High quality scent you can trust. I hate bad smells and strong artificial chemical smells that are trying to be something but just so chemically fake. I have a very overly sensitive strong nose. Often times things people think smell really good, I think smell really horrible (like Yankee candles for example). I have a nose for QUALITY products that contain QUALITY ingredients. When I smell something shitty and cheap, I feel personally attacked. GOOD PLEASANT SMELLS HELP ME SELF-REGULATE. BASICALLY YOU SOLVE THE PROBLEM OF DYSREGULATION IN INDIVIDUALS WITH OLFACTORY SENSORY SENSITIVITY. …allegedly. I still have yet to smell your candles but I really want to someday soon!

bullet points I would add: - packaging and presentation are beautiful, an elevated experience not available from Target Threshold or w/e - because of ^ the candles are a potential conversation piece, look good in Instagram tableaus, worth unboxing on stories, etc. - kind of tying into "single scents are boring," the scents are also elevated and nuanced beyond what's available from bigger brands, offering a more detailed sensual experience (ties into slowing down too!) and another opportunity to demonstrate one's taste and refinement

I like the “helping you slow down.” I think that caters to intentional buyers and a more specific/niche audience. A good thing. I’d love to know a couple data-driven value props; something like “the average candle from a big brand has 20 ingredients that are bad for the environment. Ours has 0.”

Stop focusing on the rational attributes that everyone competes on and lean more into your edge. Your story, your brand meta. Need to bootstrap a cult kind of thing and do voodoo candle club events, bottomless or similar peculiar. Like gothic candle night. Baddies pouring black candles after dark telling fortunes. Make it a thing. Make it a movie. Make it a ritual.

zoom out a level IMO. what does it mean for a person's identity that they care about these kinds of factors? what I'm getting is tasteful, appreciates "the finer things," health-conscious... kind of Goop vibes, but artisanal (and without the cringe lol) message = the kind of person you want to be uses these candles to enhance their lifestyle

I got it started for you: This is a great early-stage distribution moment. Your friend Samantha is doing the right thing—sharing pain publicly to see who leans in. Let’s sharpen it using the Lean Validation + JTBD combo from Distribution Is Hard. 🔍 Let’s Break Down the Post Like a Coach Would: ✅ What’s Working: Language is honest, specific, and human (not polished marketing). It’s not a pitch—it’s a call for resonance. That’s 🔥 for attracting innovators. She lists real pains with existing candles. 👀 Where It Could Go Deeper: Each bullet is good, but some are product-y, not job-y. Let’s sharpen the Jobs to Be Done—so the message hits harder. 🎯 JTBD Reframe: What Is the Customer Really Hiring the Candle For? Let’s turn each pain into a functional/emotional/social job: Problem Listed Reframed as a JTBD “Job” Paraffin wax, artificial smells “I want to feel safe burning something in my home—not worried about toxins.” (Functional + Emotional) Single scents are boring “I want my home to smell dynamic and alive—not like the same scent every time.” (Emotional) Bad customer service “I want to feel cared for—even when I’m just buying a candle.” (Emotional + Social) No transparency about sourcing “I want to know what I’m bringing into my home—and where it comes from.” (Functional + Identity) Most stuff is built for speed “I want a ritual that helps me slow down—not just another task.” (Emotional + Social) ✅ Recommended Action: Turn This into a Lean Validation Post Try something like: “Most stuff in our homes is built for speed. Not many things help you slow down. That’s why I started making candles differently. 🌿 Clean ingredients 🕯️ Layered scents 🫶 A little more care Curious—what do you wish candles did differently?” Then score it using the Lean Validation Scorecard: Clear pain communicated? Right people engage? Urgency? Actions (DMs, comments)? Offers to buy, try, or pay? 💬 Want to Help Her Pick a Direction? Ask her: “Which job feels most urgent or emotionally charged to you?” → That’s often the best starting wedge. Or: “Which of these pains have you heard someone say in real life?” → That’s the magic words test. 🚀 TL;DR for Samantha: You’re doing the right thing. Let’s test one pain publicly and see who leans in. Start small, sharpen the language, build from pull. Want help writing the actual post copy or scoring the responses after? I can guide that too. https://chatgpt.com/share/68796d0b-7264-8008-a534-bb086bec0ad1

I don’t have problems with other candles etc (I don’t buy candles for myself) To me candles are a gift to someone. A way to make them feel. Making that special requires the gift to be too. Intent + quality makes it really special. Add the story of humankind and you can tell a story along the great gift. The way it makes me feel to gift humankind candles knowing the quality and hearing that appreciating even after gifting when the candles got used is what makes it special. How does that translate into what to focus on? Packaging, messaging, experience. Apple purchase makes you feel a certain way. Rolex too. Porsche … I don’t have to say anything about Porsche 😁 I think that’s the line. At least for me. Quality + Emotion + Story/Message That’s Humankind for me. Which is why I feel it fits among the brands mentioned above. In my eyes telling that story is something to focus on. E.g. the apple 1984 ad, Porsche at the end of topgun 2. the iconic a Porsche gets you laid ads. The humankind version of some message and story / way of communicating that.

I enjoy your unique scents. Pistachio cream and Japanese milk bread remains a fond memory in my recollection, and I doubt I'll ever find another company that does something like it or as well as you did.

Scent molecules can cross the blood-brain barrier. Our olfactory system is directly linked to the brain. Natural compounds positively influence mood, memory, and cognition, while synthetic fragrances used in most candles can disrupt this process or cause harm.
