Usable at 18 and taxed at a long-term capital gains rate.
Maybe this is part of some version of UBI 2 decades from now.
If parents contribute $1k per year over 18 years, and we expect 8% annual returns, that's almost $50k, post tax.
If the kid doesn't just blow it on traditional higher education, that's a nice bankroll for a good handful of experiments and building something.
