does stoicism appeal to you as a woman? i often see men posting about it or engaging with it more than women, but have never taken the time (yet) to reflect on why that may be.

When I’m stoic I’m called cold, emotionless, or get accused of having testing bitch face. The same way confidence and leadership can be seen as being bossy. Hate this shit.

no because it is a harmful recapitulation of historic masculinity standards https://www.theindy.org/article/3004

It’s appealing to me in theory but nearly impossible to implement on practice I don’t think my mindset/personality are a good fit

My husband is stoic. I loved that about him until I also realised it means he never talks. Now it’s a damn pain 😁 I think the element of not needing to express every thought or feeling is attractive but every plus has a minus.

well i’m not a woman but i’ll still give my 2 cents because i’ve thrown the same question to my mom and sisters and cousins and their reply was that they do not in anyway feel the need to be stoic neither do they want to, they said they feel better sharing and airing out their problems which is a good thing “a problem shared is a problem half solved”

Not a woman... so can't answer... but my sense is that the modern version of stoicism (including the extremely powerful Serenity Prayer) could be valuable for anyone. My daughter and are listening to "The Obstacle is the Way" by Ryan Holiday and some of the points really resonated with her.

Hey, I think you raise a great point tbh Stoicism does seem to be more popular among men, and I've wondered about that too as a man😂 I think part of the reason is that stoicism can be seen as a very 'tough guy' philosophy. But I believe there's more to it than just that. Stoicism is ultimately about living in accordance with reason and virtue, which could benefit anyone regardless of gender icl I know you made this post to ask but do YOU think there are certain aspects of stoicism that might be more appealing to women than others?

@erica had a good take on this I can’t find. Essentially noting that all of that was conceived before women were ever taken seriously and so that impacts both the philosophy and who it resonates with

I once had an extensive reading phase on stoicism — only to realise its anti-women in nature. All the natural strengths a woman possesses seems to require curtailing to practice stoicism. Regardless, interesting insights on the human mind — highly recommend Meditations if you’re curious :)

If they were really stoics, they wouldn’t worry about the life philosophies held by other people Instead, they are probably just trying to catch the Current Thing, which is usually downstream of the valley in this case

Kinda... there's some merit to it. But like all of Western philosophy, it's very centered on the male experience, and usually particularly the wealthy enough to sit around and think all day male experience. I say this as someone who is literally going to school to finish my bachelor's in philosophy now. All my papers in my Early Modern Philosophy class in winter semester boiled down to, "Yeah, his epistemology is great, but he cribbed his work from X woman, and then completely ignored his own standards when trying to prove his particular version of "god" exists."

Idk if people might find this sensitive But i think it's because women are more emotional in everything basically and stoicism feels like being cold/hard all the time about your personal life

It's a way of virtue that can be considered in all daily actions. Know that you must always do what is right. Big reason why you hear abt it with men is because of folks like Robert Greene and Ryan Holiday, Jocko, etc, that supplement stoicism with hyper masculinity. Psychology, women are more often considered as carers, more emotional, and less able to adapt to challenges than men. this view is bogus, but as the stereotypes grows, so do the problems. That said, the teachings are a great indicator of dealing with life's challenges. I predict a rise in interest that can build over the next year*.

As a woman who is prone to stoicism, I would say that it has not been a benefit to me whatsoever - more like a detriment. Even a good friend of mine once said she was amazed that nothing ever bothers me and was surprised when I revealed that was not the case. She told me that I have the brain of a man, but the heart of woman. But people tend to think you don't feel anything or don't care or that you'e somehow invincible. There are times where it can be beneficial, like in an emergency or stressful situation. We tend to keep our cool. We're survivors. But when dealing with interpersonal relationships it kind of sucks as I am not the norm as a woman. Do men tend to value stoicism in themselves?

As an adjective describing typical behavior, it's fine? Definitely not APPEALING- I like people who laugh and shout and enjoy life in the open- but not inherently off-putting. Stoicism as a philosophy, however, is either basically cognitive behavioral therapy, or a giant red flag of someone suppressing their emotions instead of dealing with them healthily. Very little in between. Usually it's the ones who talk about stoicism unprompted who are in the latter camp IME, the former tends to be more "yeah I picked up this thing that helped" when asked but is otherwise chill.
