We used to have exchanges with students from The Netherlands and they were more motivated and more competitive, also really proficient in mathematics and English. I’m not surprised.

I think that if you look deeper, you will find all the blue countries have a culture of watching engish-spoken movies and series with subtitles. Germany synchronises. Even when they speak on the radio about the birthday of Brad Pitt, they will use audio clips from his movies IN GERMAN! They don't get to interact in English in their youth outside of their school lessons, whereas in The Netherlands we get lessons early, get exposure early and get practice early. Many university educations in The Netherlands are taught in English, too.

This probably explains this πŸ‘‰Netherlands from what i know has a large number of expats working in tech. And I suspect the number would be highest after UK. Know folks working in Booking.com, Uber, and Stripe .

genuinely hilarious to be one of the worst countries in europe at speaking our neighbor's language But actually, I would guess that if you only took the top 20% of english speakers from each country, France would do quite well. I've noticed a huge gap between average working class people and white collar professionals, and Paris vs province
