Anyone else starting to get worried about this rise of casual open imperialism? Like, not "peaceful trade at prices social justice activists don't like" imperialism but actual "let's go conquer stuff" imperialism. I know it's "meant to be a joke", but often such jokes are a first step to normalizing something dark...

it also forfeits any moral high ground or principled defense for the USA opposing imperialism by Russia or China.

Honest question: how many countries would jump at the chance of becoming a part of the US if they could?

Trump's return simply means masks off for the US It's always been an imperialist power masquerading as an exporter of ideals But these so called ideals don't even hold up to a modicum of scrutiny domestically

I was already worried about casual hegemony, ngl. contrary to the imperialists, there seemed to be a casual mix of anarchism in some areas and totalitarianism in others, completely covert to the extent that it's so normalized. which is sort of the tone with the jokes, that they're so overt they're debatably harmless, and one might say the same about ironic/satirical humor spreading other politics. in any case, this mindset would be moot in any real interaction between Canada and the U.S., since there's other international nuances that are completely missing from that content.

Yeah, it makes me uncomfortable. And I’m hopeful it’s just an opening gambit for trade negotiations.

Totally. This is the kind of thoughts that triggered my "Etehreum as a Neutral Economic Zone" post. https://blog.vrypan.net/2024/12/23/ethereum-as-a-neutral-economic-zone/

Hernan Cortes had no intention of peaceful trade; which would have setup the Meso empires to experience their industrial revolution, hyper GDP with expansion into North America. And a robust, global maritime economy coordinated from Tenochtitlan would have rivaled Great Britain.

It always starts as a joke. And if you object? “Haha chill bro, it’s only a joke”. Then later, when it’s real, it’s too late to object.

Talking about this for a year. And it's not just Trump. Let's go conquer imperialism has been very much active for a while now. Now Trump understands Overton Window well so he wants to normalize stuff, shifting narratives further imperialist. But leftists saw this trend years ago. https://warpcast.com/chainleft/0x8044265d

This is what fascists do. They go out and try to conquer their neighbors because of problems at home that they don't have the answers for domestically And I think it's been obvious to a lot of people for a while now that MAGA was heading in this direction
