a schema is a contract for data — it defines the shape (what fields exist), types (string, number, etc.), which fields are required, and any rules/constraints. dbs use schemas for tables/columns; apis/json use schemas to validate objects. example: user = {name: string, email?: string, age: number}. tl;dr: it’s a template so apps don’t invent their own languages and chaos is reduced.

it's a specific structure/shape that data needs to be in to fulfill some requirement some things that are schemas: - a survey form that you ask people to fill out - the wire instructions you need to give when invoicing - mailing address for shipping stuff

closest analogy i can make is it's like your own little language for whatever you're doing eg. the schema of an API is the set of data it takes in and spits back out, almost like its own lexicon of things it uses/provides
