I wrote a reflection about my first month on Farcaster. Honest feedback is welcome. Don't worry about my feelings. I'm more interested in your POV, especially if you have a strong reaction. :) https://paragraph.com/@patriciaxlee/most-people-dont-know-how-to-be-interesting

Grateful that you've shared this perspective because it's not one I hear enough of on here. There have been some comments along the lines of "I can't wait until people use Farcaster to talk about something other than Farcaster" and while that isn't what you're saying, it is in that direction. This: "Most people don’t know how to be interesting, even though everyone has something interesting to share. I think it often comes from self-doubt or fear of rejection. So people hide behind safe, generic content, then wonder why no one is interested." Part of me wants channels to provide a bit more structure where people can feel comfortable sharing in their particular, likely chosen, cozy corner. Not to diminish the point that the infrastructure doesn't dictate whether anything shared is interesting, just glad to see infra mentioned in your piece. Overall, glad you're here and glad you've shared your first month of musings! Looking forward to more

I feel this. I’m only a few weeks in and it first felt like an echo chamber of inside jokes/memes I didn’t get. The builder aspect here is what kept me trying because I’m a dev. But eventually, finding/searching for the content I like and then just commenting and posting my own interests helped. Was nervous to be me here at first for sure. It helps that everyone here seems pretty open, interesting, and fun in their own right.

Read, enjoyed, and minted. 🙏 I’ve written some posts too about how farcaster is for builders and that’s what makes it so interesting and attractive, and different from other corners of the internet. Glad to see that spirit still exists for newer people too. Thanks for writing and sharing, and it’s good to connect with you here!

I think part of the problem is that on Farcaster (more than other social media platforms) people feel they can be 'context-free anons' with: cartoon pfps, no bio, no outbound links to their prior work...and expect the same level of inbound engagement as 'doxxed' people who bring (at least some of) their {offline, offchain} self to engage with others. On cryptotwitter being an anon (in many cases) was advantageous because the name of the game was ragebaiting and trolling people to get promoted in Twitter's algo, but that's not what's rewarded here. The other problem is that when you don't bring your whole self to FC, you end up only talking about crypto which just leads to incestuous headbanging over memecoins and other zero-sum games that I, and many others, find incredibly boring & uninteresting. There's no hope of going from URL to IRL because they've already put FC in a crypto-only box. All this doesn't mean that you can't be anon on FC, but expect to work harder & stake reputation in other ways.

real ass article. @damariscosss posted this meme a bit ago, and not only is it funny, but it’s so accurate that in fact, i only discovered it by stalking her pfp after she interacted w me… ppl here are not the same as those on x, willing to reply to every post that says “those who grind r those who reply” type of big accounts who don’t offer any value— ppl here want to connect in a real way. they want the unfiltered thoughts & feedback. and this is the type of authenticity that i keep using & endorsing farcaster for. im not sure of the future but one thing is evident: there IS value in our non-scripted thoughts — free of the fear of adjusting to an algorithm, to a niche, or to our own self doubts :)

interesting and i think it’s also because of what motivates them to be here. if people are only here for farming tokens for example, they will just post random images and comments to get attention, but wont dig deeper.

It’s a great read, but it misinterprets the visibility complaint. The spirit of it is often not “I’m so interesting, I should be visible!” but rather “I’m just as uninteresting as most people here, so why am I the one that is invisible?”. I don’t think it’s useful to talk about being ‘interesting’ here, though. You definitely see that while there’s some correlation between effort/competence seen in a cast and the visibility/engagement it gets, it’s usually startlingly low. The natural thing to do in such an environment is to engage in some form of undemanding circle jerk, which seems to be more cost-effective. Most will adapt to it. Or leave, as this state of play is psychologically rewarding to a very limited number of people.

farcaster feels more like reddit than twitter, where commenting on topics that interest you allows you to "advance" and become part of it; maybe because of the size of farcaster, this feels more like networking than a town hall

Very good reflection, being here I have been able to connect with some important people and I have noticed that web 2.0 left us with a wounded ego due to "attention," or perhaps distorted. Here I have found people who are genuinely interested in my interests and who share from the heart. I come from Instagram and really, "being interesting"... is a topic. Being interesting or seeming interesting?
