I really don’t understand the opposition from people about universal healthcare. I know it’s not perfect, but it’s certainly better than the shit we have now - Universal healthcare but only for old people. That in itself is just so inefficient. It’s literally the worst of both worlds. The government pays inflated prices for healthcare (only for old people). Why not just pay reduced prices for everyone? I don’t know anyone who thinks our current system is working. I pay almost 20% of my income for insurance that can tell my doctor “no, he actually doesn’t need that thing you the doctor said he needs. I always hear people say “well the wait times with universal healthcare would be outrageous!” Idk about you, I’m ok with waiting a little longer if it means not being held hostage by insurance companies more worried about profit than patients.

Because the united states has fought a cultural war against socialism/communism since the 60s, and creating a half assed system like our current social services serves to further that goal ( "look how ineffective the government is, thank god for private companies and capitalism) People got so mind broke by the cold war, we are still suffering today

And the wait times is no argument anymore- 3-6 months in this country to see a specialist for problems your doctor thinks could kill you. And that’s if your insurance company ok’s it.

I’d be about universal healthcare if it helps me not have to jump through hoops for meds and general health. But, as long as we live in a county with the haves and the have nots, where there is always going to be a gap between fortunate and unfortunate people, something helping everyone wont happen

Problem is the people have no say. Most of the country is actually in favor of some form of universal healthcare. It’s the lobbyists who stop it from ever happening. Gov is corrupt.

I couldn’t agree more. I can’t believe people are ok with not knowing the prices you pay or having it managed by someone whose job it is to make money by denying coverage is beyond messed up.

my insurance (which I pay several $100/mo out of pocket for) charged me $138 for an unnecessary OTC COVID test. Nationalize the entire thing, fire all of them, replace the entire "insurance industry" with a government office + AI, renegotiate the price of every drug / procedure / code in the US.

I lived in Italy and Japan where there’s 2 different systems and I can say with a certain confidence that the Japanese system is the best in terms of time/quality service. Not completely free (70%) and your insurance company is the government. Probably for the American people this would sound too socialist but makes absolutely sense if you think that the organization who have to take care of citizens has to be the government and cannot be a private company. In Japan you can find also numerous private structures agreed upon with the government if you want to pay more for a way better service. I mean, it’s absolutely possible. For older people with low income is completely free. I pay around 1500$ per year for a family of 5.

LOL sorry for giving a long reply. My mom had brain surgery 2.5 years ago. There was a 7 months wait because the tumor was stable and others with more urgent cases went first. During that time, we had many consultations with doctors, and nurses. They were all super kind and patient. The surgery was 8 hours and a success. She spent 2 weeks in ICU, 3 weeks in the hospital, then 3 more weeks in a brain surgery rehab facility. After that, she had 2 months of radiation and 4 months of rehab twice a week. It was all free here in Canada, and we felt supported. During the wait, my dad asked me to checked US costs, and see if we can do it earlier there. It could have reached 2.5 million+ with everything. Even with insurance a patient would still have to pay 100k+ out of pocket. I know some Canadians had bad experience and went to the US for care, but my mom’s experience here was amazing. US Rep uses the small number of Canadians who fall through the cracks to scare Americans away from free healthcare.
