my brother asked me what vpn i use because he wanted to get one i first asked him what he wanted to use it for, since different providers are better for certain services he said "I just want less of a chance of my shit getting hacked and don’t like the idea of my browsing being tracked by people." i told him a vpn isn't going to protect him from getting hacked, and his browsing is still being tracked if he logs into any accounts or opens any emails with tracking info during that session. if he uses an app on his mobile phone? donezo. when i told him what he actually needed to do to stay private and have better digital security, he said "Goddamn that’s a lot...seems like it’s basically impossible" my bro is 27. he grew up in the age of the internet. and doesn't have a single idea of what it really means to stay private or semi anonymous or even remotely protected in this digital age wild that the generations who have spent the most time growing up with technology, know the least about protecting themselves while using it. this shit should be taught very early on in school honestly

The more mature technology gets the less users have to worry about internals. This is normal although maybe sad.

Totally agree. Both the importance of privacy and the how to protect it should absolutely be taught one hundred percent. Parents need to be doing this at home with their kids.

I agree with you! Cyber security should be a whole cause in school, so that people can learn atleast the basics of it

You’re in a space where privacy is second nature that’s the difference. Most people think they’re too insignificant to be tracked, while others simply haven’t wrapped their heads around why privacy matters. Your brother’s lucky to have you around; chances are he’ll pass that awareness on to his friends too.

Try this with Gen A it's worse...they have always had such gud tech that they have no idea how it works. When you had to assemble the internet yourself you learned things

if he wants to play on hard mode but actually get what he wants, Tor Browser will get him most of the way there. also great way of experiencing the war on privacy, getting blocked from half of the internet.

Nord VPN/ Surfshark VPN ass marketing points… It’s incredible how much money they all make, but also just how irresponsible in their marketing claims they also all are…

I know how to go fully private. Like God level private if I wanted to. I just don't have a very good motivation for that anymore tbh. I used to be crazy about this about 7 years ago.

Different interests probably play a role too. I'm not much older than your brother (30) but I have always been interested in the deeper aspects of the technology I use every day. But for some people a surface level understanding is enough, and these days it's easier than ever to not think twice about it

Kinda sad that using the internet every day doesn’t mean we know how to protect ourselves on it.
