my brother asked me what vpn i use because he wanted to get one i first asked him what he wanted to use it for, since different providers are better for certain services he said "I just want less of a chance of my shit getting hacked and don’t like the idea of my browsing being tracked by people." i told him a vpn isn't going to protect him from getting hacked, and his browsing is still being tracked if he logs into any accounts or opens any emails with tracking info during that session. if he uses an app on his mobile phone? donezo. when i told him what he actually needed to do to stay private and have better digital security, he said "Goddamn that’s a lot...seems like it’s basically impossible" my bro is 27. he grew up in the age of the internet. and doesn't have a single idea of what it really means to stay private or semi anonymous or even remotely protected in this digital age wild that the generations who have spent the most time growing up with technology, know the least about protecting themselves while using it. this shit should be taught very early on in school honestly

The more mature technology gets the less users have to worry about internals. This is normal although maybe sad.

for sure - we grew up with a ton of the technology still there, so we grew up having to understand to some degree how the internet works now that so much is abstracted away, you have no idea what’s going on and being collected behind the scenes
