Something that took me a while to learn, and have yet to internalize fully: The concept of a thing can get in the way of knowing it Because when you think you know something (via the mind’s conception), you don’t give it the same attention in the present. Nothing is static, so the latter is the only way to truly know something

This is an area of advantage for smart uneducated people. Educated people have other people’s ideas and concepts thrown at them. Sometimes it helps to start with a blank state. What we call first principles

You are telling me I have to keep relearning a topic over and over again to maintain my knowledge on the subject? I am hearing this for the first time...

Have you found any practices that help you stay in direct contact with the thing itself, beyond the concept?

Very important, when as a parent you think you can offer your kid all the knowledge in the world. This is for example, the reason I hate classic works adaptations per kids. Like, no, your 5 year old will probably get nothing out of a 10 page version of a Shakespeare work, but you will deprive your kid of the joy of discovering it when the time is right.

Kant talks about this in the critique of pure reason, the amphiboly — when people confuse and object of the pure understanding with an object of the senses

It’s as if our minds creates shortcuts that prevent us from fully experiencing that “something”. So I feel, by letting go of these assumptions, embracing the dynamism of nature, we cultivate deeper understanding and appreciation. Thats why we always have to stay curious and open minded.

It sounds like you're speaking of "qualia" and entering philosophical thinking. Qualia are the subjective, qualitative properties of conscious experience. They are what it feels like to have a particular experience, such as the pain of a headache or the taste of lemon. Qualia are often described as being intrinsic, private, and directly accessible through introspection.

this is why NYC culture, and other localized cultures, fell apart izo. at some point people started coming here thinking they already knew the place, ready to have their nyc experience in spite of the real culture that existed here. and eventually that idea became more real than the reality, and supplanted it https://farcaster.xyz/zoo/0xd284ae5f
