i built in Minecraft today and i learned from a 10yo named Billy and i loved it. Billy is fully fluent in Minecraft. watching him play reminded me of how back in 2009 i could use an iPhone 1000x better than my parents. btw i totally underestimated the complex long-term planning Minecraft requires to world build.

you can build functional computers in minecraft with redstone, and mods like greg tech enable real-world material science/manufacturing (chips rockets etc).. insane game. factions is when another small city of players comes to pillage (your) village

Minecraft is awesome! It encourages creativity, imagination, and perseverance by motivating players to stick with a build until it’s fully realized. I'm not that great at it, but I team up with my 8-year-old son. I design the ideas on paper, and he brings them to life in Minecraft. We've built lots of zoos so far!

One of the only ways I can "spend time" with my nephew and it's crazy how intricate some of the stuff he and his friends build is. And how much pure joy they get out of griefing me because I am old.

Minecraft-inspired content is also an absurd percentage of all the content uploaded on YouTube at this point. Playthroughs, mods, fan animations, parody songs, crossovers, live-action remakes, virtual walk-and-talks… practically an entire culture unto itself. There’s so much footage of the game itself that people even train generative AI video models on it as an exercise. I bought Minecraft well over a decade ago to support a smol indie developer just starting out, back in the day. I still haven't played it! But I think it's really cool, and yeah it does seem like you need serious strategy and planning to last long. Really want to check it, but just never have time to game anymore.
