cheaper housing would help solve a lot of problems: - more people would start families (more babies instead of cats/dogs) - less loneliness - improved mental/physical health - reduce homelessness etc etc all of these problems seem to be getting worse and they are all downstream of housing being expensive (even the case for really smart software engineers). not saying this is the only thing but definitely seems like a good one to focus on.

Just don't make it artificially cheaper. Let the market build and compete in price. Moving away from centralized hubs for high earners (NYC, SF, LA, Seattle) could help too since that just pushes prices up in those places and displaces other people.

Agreed, but how would you do that in a sustainable way? Feels like the economy is in deadlock at times

Agreed, although how you get cheaper housing isn’t clear. Without a clear leverage point, this might not be the angle to attack the problem at. Attempting to address income inequality might get at the downstream problems that you highlighted. Viable proposals that I’ve read about for addressing income inequality: more co-ops (employee owned businesses) and more unions as a countervailing force.

In my country, Iran, rent is higher than most people’s income, at this point, it’s almost impossible for anyone to buy a home

This take sums it up: “The weird thing about real estate being an investment in the U.S. is that news of homes becoming more affordable and prices coming down is reported as bad news. I think this is a fundamental dysfunction of the U.S. economy.” https://bsky.app/profile/carnage4life.bsky.social/post/3lt2cxrhebk2s

besides environmental, construction, and estate reform... I think there's a question of optimal density, and there should be steady growth of new cities with SOTA civil engineering. it should be trivial to relocate to somewhere equally or more logistically accessible. besides, I think land value tax with a subsistent/habitat credit would be a good forcing function for cheaper housing.

The issues are downstream of people considering their houses as investment rather than a place to live in
