I had this thought the other day - people talk about entrepreneurs taking risks but in most cases, there's no real risk the risk is so negligible, it might as well be zero real risk would blow our minds - it's unimaginable, incomprehensible imagine free soloing El Cap or fighting on the frontlines of an active war zone, that's real risk so out there that your brain rejects it entirely, that's real risk almost none of us know what risk really is

opportunity cost risk—negligible if you’re some combo of young, smart, technical, and live in america capital risk—mostly only risked by people who can afford it and with enough bets that the risk is fairly low social risk—entrepreneurs are glorified in America physical risk—zero good take

Great perspective. Computer work is pure joy compared to most jobs that people *have* to do, especially if you are entrepreneur and working on things of value to you and others

Very interesting topic, I've thought about that a lot In a way it falls within the same category of how much easier life is today than it used to be 70-100+ years ago But those examples involve physical risk which have biochemical (adrenaline, dopamine, cortisol etc) mechanisms that help cope. There's a psychological and social scaffold too, because you're "fighting for your country / a cause" (beyond just trying to stay physically alive which has its own builtsupport system) so fear and pain are put in perspective Reputational risk from business ventures is not existential in a strict sense, but it feels existential (also depending on your country, it can be more or less real) and there are no biological systems for that Entrepreneurs have an unusual tolerance for risk and are better at processing / rationalising / suppressing status and reputational issues There is a very interesting book (below) which basically says that there are a lot of entrepreneurs in America because they are the offspring of people who were crazy enough to make the journey; that also kinda counts for Australia

Yeah it’s all highly recoverable risk. And you end up learning so much about a wide range of things, including yourself. IMO if you have zero dependents, and enough interest in doing it, there is absolutely zero risk.

I think it’s more about what we’ve trained ourselves to see as 'risk' people usually avoid the kind of risk that actually matters - regret, stagnation, not chasing what calls to you. we rationalize, optimize, play it safe. and existential risks like war, illness, wasting your shot get buried under comfort zones. maybe entrepreneurs just choose their risks more consciously. not less afraid, just more awake to what’s truly at stake.

it’s only the social risk of not being like everyone else around you which is why being somewhat of a misfit helps agree that any actual tangible risks are negligible

Too real bruh… Most “risks” people brag about are just discomfort in disguise. Real risk has stakes you can’t walk away from.
