Friends, there's no easy way to say this.

After 300+ days of iteration, we've decided to sunset Yapster and begin again.

To some of our most devout believers, I know this is not what you wanted to hear. And I'm sorry.

To everyone that played: Thank you. We never took your time, energy, or belief for granted.

Here's some context around what led to this decision:

Over the last few months, we rebuilt the Yapster app from the ground up. We set out to create the best possible version of the product. One where all the friction points and all the possible confounding variables are gone. 

The goal was simple: give the core idea the best possible shot. (aka create a launchpad for memes that has the best possible chances of generating runner in a fun and fair way).

For a while, it was plausible that the product wasn’t working because of specifics. Maybe the memes that were winning aren't actually what players wanted? Maybe there was too much cheating? Maybe token delivery was too slow? Maybe the free-to-play dynamics were attracting the wrong users? Maybe we just need to maximize token visibility by launching on pump? These were concrete, fixable problems, and we addressed every single of them.

When you remove every variable you thought might be breaking the system, and it still doesn't work, you're left with a different kind of question. Is there something structurally wrong with the idea that requires a larger reset?

That's ultimately where we landed.

You might feel otherwise, but I want you to know the whole team gave this everything we had. Over the last ~6 months, we shipped countless iterations. I personally gave away a 6-figure ($200k+) airdrop. We've worked 80h/week for months. We left no stone unturned.

Thank you to everyone who believed, played, yapped, and built alongside us. We’re endlessly grateful.

I dont write things manually because of how the receiver feels. I do it because of how it makes me feel

the downside of obsessively delegating everything to AI is that now, whenever i sit down to do anything remotely manual, it feels like a gargantuan waste of time, and i get distracted with brainstorming ways in which to automate that process.

e.g. writing a congratulatory message for an employee's anniversary should probably come from the heart – even though i could feed an LLM all my past texts, emails, and bad jokes and have it quickly produce something that looks + feels meaningful.

it's almost as if there's some kind of fucked up opportunity cost to just being human for a moment.

refactored the shit out of our editor to improve gesture smoothness and performance. also added zooming the whole canvas.

challenges
- handling conflicting gestures between elements gracefully
- performance differences between iOS and android esp when bridging between js x ui threads
- managing react state during complex gestures while minimizing rerenders
- gestures come with a certain intuition and expectation from the user for how things should respond. converting this into rules was a fun challenge
- ai had a tough time reasoning about gestures and accounting for edge cases and interaction side effects. maybe cus it doesnt have hands 🤷‍♂️
