You're basically on the hook for the full time. Anything less will come at a repetution cost. So if it's not working as a networking conversation, make it some other kind of conversation. Virtually everyone in tech is smart and weird enough to have some hidden interest buried deep in them that completely lights them up when they start talking about it Find the thing that they actually want to talk about, dig into it as deep as you can go, and learn something weird. Source: I did nearly 1000 interviews over the course of a few years

Carry a drink and tell them you’re going to refill or get another, actually do it, and then go back and tell them it was lovely chatting and need to talk to a few more people before you go. A lot of times that can actually be true. Can also offer to swap contacts to help tie a bow to the convo (and just in case you never know down the road…)
