need a graceful way to curtail networking conversations quicker when there is really no overlap. any ideas?

You're basically on the hook for the full time. Anything less will come at a repetution cost.

So if it's not working as a networking conversation, make it some other kind of conversation.

Virtually everyone in tech is smart and weird enough to have some hidden interest buried deep in them that completely lights them up when they start talking about it

Find the thing that they actually want to talk about, dig into it as deep as you can go, and learn something weird.
