I need to settle a debate I’m having with my boyfriend: Is black tie fair attire for a wedding? Tuxedo for men etc.

he can wear a black suit with a black tie if he wants to be let in but considered a chump, else it's tuxedo time baby

Fair like proper attire? Or fair like it’s too much to ask for ?

IMO black attire is only fair if the venue matches the attire. I’m sorry it’s crazy to be in a full gown in a farm or in a tuxedo getting served sliders

Depends on the setting, but if a night event, yes. If it’s a day time garden style wedding, no.

Black tie is perfect for a wedding — it’s one of the most important moments of your lives, so it should be appropriately formal — BUT you also gotta consider the vibe (and weather) of the location

Only if they explicitly stated that it's a black tie event on the invitation. You can't risk wearing a tux and up staging the groom, the same way you can't wear white to a wedding and up stage the bride.
