Less hackathon projects More retentive products Feels like a lot of builders in crypto overindex on the former because they romanticize the technology and the latter are much harder to build

Builders overindex on the former because they get paid more in rewards relative to the time investment compared to putting in work for a long bet with much lowered success rate. Protocols overindex on rewarding the former because it makes their ecosystem's vanity metrics look better and increases the number of "partnerships" they can claim. If you want to fix the cycle, we have to kill the partnership meta, we have to stop falling for VC portco incest as evidence of real traction, we have to go back to the standard Bitcoin set for this industry. Hard work, infinite games, real cypherpunk

the former is great for learning things and iterating quickly/getting experience, but agreed building something more long term and retention focused is the way to go -- just takes discipline and conviction!!

it's not about romanticism the incentives aren't there unless you have mid 7 figs in the bank and can afford to do deep deep work

One of the winners at zkhack berlin had won 60+ hackathons (in his X bio). Good for him I guess but it feels like fast fashion for devs. I don’t get if sponsors view this as marketing spend or if they actually think this will contribute to the ecosystem. Don’t dismiss hackathons. Every retentive product started as a crazy weekend idea once. The real issue, Not iterating after the hack. Build fast. But follow through. #BUIDL #CryptoBuilders

What gets measured gets made. Hackathons are like dopamine hits. Active after 90 days? Few… It’s not even over indexing because of the tech. It’s the KPIs that incentivize it.
