28 Years Later. (dir. Danny Boyle, writ. Alex Garland, 2025) This film has made the biggest impression on me since The Brutalist. First, you need to make sure to watch 28 Days Later (same duo, 2006). I wouldn’t say that I *loved* that film in its own right — not a huge fan of zombie movies, more on that later — but it is an interesting aesthetic and fun to see a very young Cillian Murphy. In any case, this sequel more than justifies the original. (I don’t think I’ve ever said that before or heard that said. It’s quite interesting) Basically, the movie is a commentary on zombie movies or really “survive-at-any-cost” horror movies in general). The original of these films was such a movie, I guess back when they were a little less prolific. But for this one, you think it’s going to be that, and then it flips that arc on its head to explore something much deeper, human, and more compelling. I won’t say too much about it, but I would encourage you to think about what kind of “hero’s journey” is being shown here… I think it’s a totally novel and interesting one. And what’s fascinating is that it is uniquely possible bc of its contextual response to the original. Ralph Feinnes is epic and unforgettale (the theater made sounds of delight when he appeared). It’s like Kurtz of Apocalypse Now went sane. The whole film was shot on iPhone, and that gave it a somehow documentary kind of feel while also remaining a stunning aesthetic. A very impressive choice and execution. I will be surprised — and happy — if I like another film this year as much as this one. Super highly recommend. would be excited to talk about this with you after you see it.

Can’t wait to watch it. Loved the first one, and the second was decent. Did you watch 28 weeks later yet?

Haven’t watch many (no kid) movies recently. Shame tbh. I’ve seen several comments like this though. Guess I may have to explore watching the original and then this

I’ve got to check this out. I’ve never really been a fan of zombie movies either but watching Sinners opened me up to it. Realized that it’s not just about gore and shock value…lots of insightful commentary and symbolic punch in a thoughtfully crafted zombie film

this movie, man...feels kinda like Boyle & Garland got away with a crime to actually make this movie this way all the way to theathers also, the sound design was almost its own character through the whole movie. the whole bit with Kipling's poem...chills

Need to see it. Didn't know it was fully shot on an iPhone. Have you seen 28 Weeks Later? Should I watch both prior movies before seeing 28 Years Later?

I'm so glad you wrote this! I've been seeing the previews at the theater and wasn't sure if I was going to see it (in the theater) yet. Also! I haven't seen 28 days yet, so I'll make sure and watch it first.
