question. are guided meditations nonsense? how can you get to the place of stillness and no-thought if someone is yapping in your ear? personal experiences and preferences welcome

There is no such thing as no-thought state. Thoughts come and go, you should start to embrace you are just an observer 🫶🏼

I know some good guided meditations, they definitely serve their purpose. It all depends on what your initial intention is and what you are hoping to achieve through meditation.

It's mainly about learning. My mind is so full of thoughts, and so easily distracted, that without a guide I would forget that I'm supposed to be meditating. The guide helps bring me back, reset. I also like that they provide many different examples and visualizations. You never know which one is going to resonate and help you understand. I'm sure you reach a point where it becomes unhelpful, but I'm certainly not where near that.

Also I would disagree with the idea of ‘no thought’. Having zero thoughts isn’t achievable and can be potentially dangerous. The idea of meditation is to practice allowing the thoughts to come and go, letting the thoughts in rather than blocking them out and allowing them to pass, bringing the attention back to the body.

here's a free month for a meditation app named waking up. i got free access for life because i had supported him before, a long time ago. some people don't like this person but i do anyway check it out for free (don't buy anything i just wanted you to have an example to try) https://dynamic.wakingup.com/guestpass/SC88CF8EE

It certainly helps new people learn how to do it, what’s its about and what’s isn’t about. I did it for a while then stopped as I didn’t think I needed it anymore. Recently came back to it and discovered more aspects of meditation and cool insights. Try it out, headspace is a great app to test them out. Might be for you or it might not. The point is there’s not a ‘right way’ of doing it.

I defer to other experts here. My personal take is they’re only nonsense if the goal is to reach no thought more quickly. Otherwise I’ve found it very similar to my experience of hypnotherapy. Given how much tension we can carry in our body, the guided meditation can help people relax their body first through visualizations. Once relaxed, this can eventually lead to no thought.
