question. are guided meditations nonsense? how can you get to the place of stillness and no-thought if someone is yapping in your ear? personal experiences and preferences welcome

I defer to other experts here. My personal take is they’re only nonsense if the goal is to reach no thought more quickly. Otherwise I’ve found it very similar to my experience of hypnotherapy. Given how much tension we can carry in our body, the guided meditation can help people relax their body first through visualizations. Once relaxed, this can eventually lead to no thought.
