appreciation post for @edgecity: to me, the most discouraging part of social media is how it erodes nuance and flattens complexities into zero-sum binaries and moral absolutism. you’re either good or evil, right or wrong, with us or against us. on my first night at Edge, i heard @timour and @audreyt speak about Plurality: “not about one truth winning out, but many truths coexisting and generating better questions.” the concept hit. i had just left LA in the midst of protests. since then, the Israel–Iran conflict erupted. hundreds of thousands marched for No King’s Day. the US Army celebrated its 250th birthday. all events that ignite immediate, polarized takes online. plurality offers us a different approach. it shifts from judgment (who's right?) to generative conversation (what's true for you? how can we find common ground to build better together?) if we want change or progress, we should start there more often. and remember: most humans want other humans to be safe and free from violence.

Ted, thank you so much for coming and being such an epic vibe in the community! It’s amazing having you here. And +1 for such a thoughtful reflection on Plurality and why it’s such an important idea in the world right now.

The concept of pluralism was drilled into me at an early age by the late Aga Khan. As a naive young Canadian, I was spoiled for pluralism and my thinking was usually, “duh, it’s obvious”. You can imagine how I felt as I watched new media and politics dismantle the very concept over the last couple of decades. Now I know that pluralism, like freedom, isn’t free. It’s hard won, one mind at a time. If you believe in it, it behooves you to practice and preach it.

yes. love this. and, it flattens creativity too (which obvs is also a complexity)… have you read Naomi Klein’s Doppelgänger? highly rec, it digs into these things in a journalistic way.

I appreciate you sharing such thoughtful updates from Edge Esmeralda. They really feel from the heart. You reminded me of a verse from one of my favorite Rumi poems: "Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing, there is a field. I’ll meet you there."

recommend everything from @ethereal-forest, including https://theopenmachine.net/ & https://app.manifold.xyz/c/invertedcity?utm_source=collector_app&utm_campaign=claim&utm_medium=creator_identity (even though it's localism focused, it's intended to be locally pluralistic) (P.S. ❤️ @audreyt!)

When a person violates the USA Constitution and it gets up held in court, then in a Country of law and order, we have many more than black and white issues to consider. It takes a peaceful uprising of the People!

This applies to a world in peace. Only works in a non-existential threats environment (not sure it is the correct way to spell this 🥸)
