i think people appreciated movies + shows more when we had to put in effort to see them — whether lining up at the theatre, going to a blockbuster or waiting a week to see the next television episode. one could say the same re: music + streaming, but IRL concert experiences are arguably more appreciated than ever.

Agree with you! I’m seriously exhausted from binge-watching and then not remembering anything. I enjoy weekly shows so much more these days. Gives some time for anticipation to grow and for us to speculate haha

We waited over two weeks for the right row and seat for Dune Imax. Well worth it. And love live music in small clubs or theaters.

one of my self care activities is going to the cinema solo and watching a movie that I know would would bore my wife to death. there's something about going to a physical space and watching that makes the films more memorable and impactful I also feel the same playing vinyl > streaming music. it's about the ritual

Of all the pictures you could have used to illustrate a bygone era, you happens to use one of a theatre a I used to frequent. The Uptown was an incredible place to see a movie

I just started collecting vinyl records this year, and one thing I’m appreciating is that each album comes with a memory of the record shop I bought it in. Haven’t had that experience with music in a long while

right, but there's basically no benefit to seeing most movies in theaters (people talking, expensive snacks, have to either hold your pee for 2 hours or miss some of the movie), whereas live music is the best best thing in the whole universe and can't be replicated because it's vibrations & connection

Or how about more effort being put into movies and shows? It's like a higher volume of releases coming out and the quality is not great overall. It's just cheaper to produce, etc. A lot of filler vying for our attention and money. There are still gems made & we line up for them etc. But over all, quality has left.

I agree. Anything worthwhile requires some effort, whether it's something you're working on, or something you're doing for leisure. Rituals make things fun. Going to see a movie is also about the trip there, getting snacks, finding the right seat. Each one of those things is a little experience in itself.

I also think movies have gotten progressively worse over the last 20 years and exponentially more the case in the last few. Yes, we get an occasional one that breaks through but films aren't just competing with films for "entertainment time" anymore. Can also dive more into how much worse the theater experience is..

It's like that beer at the end of a hard days work or snowboarding. You pay for quality, and that goes the same for experience.

I'm impatiently waiting the next episode of X-Men '97. I buy my music from Bandcamp. I hate streaming, although I can acknowledge its usefulness. I think the ease at which media is produced today has made objectively shit output widespread and algorithms drown out curators.

I think the fact that people used to have way fewer things to do is a big part of it.
