always SF vs. NYC, never LA (sad). anecdotally over the last 2 years, more and more of my friends have moved away from LA to SF or NYC:

to SF if they're interested in AI
to NYC if they're interested in any other tech

only friends that have stayed in LA are CPG, entertainment, or grew up / have family in LA

there's a small tech scene in salt lake and i find it easier to stand out / build my confidence in-- i'll find my way to a major after the next milestone i set(:

walkability is great. actually i didn't even know that salt lake city has some of the most beautiful mountains across america until i moved here (always thought it's barren when driving through). the downsides are the great lake potentially drying up (becomes a toxic cloud) and UV index is very high (imagine that's part of why BJ doesn't like sunlight after growing up here)

i do love Venice and a lot of what it offers: walkability, neighborhood feels, farmer's markets for fresh produce, nature like bike trails and the ocean and nearby hikes, local restaurants / shops for small businesses. and yes, the weather is incredible.

try out a city!!! you have earned it!

for like 3 years i've had the impression that SF=ai, NY=crypto, and tech broadly is just dispersed with outside the world (spacex) in texas, smaller (anduril) in cali, and larger (palantir) in nyc. personally i just love CA weather but post-covid kind of opened the country up a bit more and maybe even the world (ns).

the major cities feel like something i have to earn (intrinsic) to be in this time around. anyway im just rambling hope you find your dream city tho la is lovely

i see and hear that too love companies like boom have 3d printers in colorado to make things over night but la/ south bay packs century-deep aerospace talent and every shop you need for cnc, composites, heat-treat materials, etc inside a 20-mile loop (friends in austin hard tech missing that ability/ trying to build thank out). founders i talked to that choose la due to the generational know how + ultra-dense working chain + transportation built for wwii, port, rail ways, and major freeways = prototype today, finished part rolling out tomorrow. personally betting on the growth of ohio , illinois and michigan come back (hi tech belt) factors- railway infra and power density (11 nuclear reactors 50% of illinois grid and they’re welcoming the quantum sector)

eh, even starting to see more of that move to Texas or places where it is easier to build!

no startups in LA hollywood missed the train when SV made tech the new 1st export class vs culture of the US

I think NYC just became hot for young ppl after the pandemic after a lot of people died or left for Florida. Personally, I can't do snow, swamp humidity, and I need sunlight for more than 3 months of the year. So it's the Bay Area, LA, SD. Santa Cruz, Santa Barbara, or Marin, if I could work remotely.

SF > LA but I’m biased and a native NorCal resident.  

One of the few places to live and do biotech other than SD/Boston

LA doesn’t have the single ethos density for technology like the other two. 

There is a ton of talent, but it’s spread out. In NYC, SF you have people a few blocks away that are useful to talk to.

It’s always LA, SF or NYC and never LF :(

The worse is those who make it in SF and end up staying there. Recipe is "make it in SF, move to LA to enjoy it"

having been to all 3 LA is definitely the spot!!! so sad to see it overlooked

For me, it’s about the traffic in LA and while public transport is improving, it’s much harder compared to NYC (and to be fair SF). True if you’re going out to Bay Area you do need a car most likely, and will have to endure traffic, but downtown is still quite walkable and has concentration.

yeah, but WHERE in NYC?

i just went to a Farcon event in Brooklyn a few weeks ago; and DID NOT wanna pass thru Manhattan at all (it didn't feel safe)

ironically though, Williamsburg is probably one of my favorite neighborhoods on earth hahaha

and i still 💜 Park Slope—lived there for many wonderful years...
