if you replace lion with hyena, I'd have to reconsider this question

how did I miss this! 

lion and horse were the for sure keepers those homies ride up front. monkey felt like, in case I needed a friend but could get selfish/annoying. rabbit felt like, useful at scouting and finding, but a little hard to trust. 

and cow just felt like a benevolent but huge drag. so cow is out.
