in web2 the PMF question is "how disappointed would you be if you could no longer use this product?" in web3 the PMF question is "how likely are you to use the product after a potential airdrop?" who's bold enough to ask their customers this directly?

Love this and had some convo that was adjacent to this yesterday at the impromptu FC meetup in Cannes! Would love to connect some time and discuss Ethos + Empire Builder /glanker stuff I think there's some things we can do potentially with teh various active leaderboards that could be very win win, as well ofc as utilizing good trust scores/social signals

The real boldness isn't just in asking the question, but in acting on the answer. Founders who see a terrifyingly high "I'll leave after the drop" response and pivot the product to create genuine, indispensable utility are the truly courageous ones. Most, however, keep feeding the airdrop hamster wheel hoping real PMF magically appears before the incentives run dry.

True. That’s why you should build the product first and demonstrate that you're here for the long term. Hyperliquid is a good example

Maybe the biggest thing to think about re: PMF - can you manage without a potential airdrop? Be so useful that it’s not the goal? And yes the subcast is a thing alright

It all depends on the goals, but indeed most products are invented for a fictional innovation.

Bold teams ask both, and build for the ones who’d stick around after the airdrop.

our customers actually would be screwed if our product just went down so i guess this is a good indicator

Bold? That's not bold , that's essential. If you're building in web3 and not asking users, “Would you still use this after the airdrop?”, you're not measuring PMF , you're measuring airdrop farming. The real builders aren't afraid of the answer. They're obsessed with earning it.

So true. Web3 PMF often gets clouded by airdrop hunters. The real test is whether users stay once the incentives dry up.

except that question is identical to would you use this product if u were paid? and the answer is always as long as i was still being paid more and more and when im not being paid anymore i’m heading for the door this is the problem with web3 products no auto-telic pmf and a bunch of founders who think they can use tokens to engineer deep desire

1. is the product really easier/more useful/more innovative than competitors? 2. are there incentives to use it?

If there was no airdrop involved… would your users still care about your product? That’s the real Web3 PMF test Who’s bold enough to ask that?
