Any recommendations for headphones? I've had the Bose XM4s, regular airpods, Airpods maxes. I'm looking for headphones that are not to heavy on the head and really make things sound *clear*. I listen to a lot of jazz, bossa nova, pop etc.

Are you looking for wireless or wired? What features do you prioritise the most (e.g. ANC (if wireless) or sound quality or comfort/weight)? What’s your budget? I think if you provide these 3 parameters and ask any LLM, usually the recommendation is pretty decent.

Personally two models stand out to me, the B & W Px7 or Momentum 4 for good sound quality. I've been using the Sony XM headphones from the XM3 to the XM5 because my priority is ANC.

I listen a lot of jazz too and share them on /audiophile. If you're looking for wired headphone, I've Focal Elegia and they are highly revealing, dynamic and detailed but unless you are able to find some good deal on the used market, they are double your canadian dollars budget. Now most similar in the catalog from Focal: Lensys. Other less expensive alternatives: Sennheiser HD 599, RODE NTH-100, Focal Listen Pro, Hifiman Sundara Closed Back. Do you have a dac/amp to properly drive them? You can improve your listening with your current headphones by using SoundID Reference or Morphit (also avaiable on mobile with the app USB Audio Player Pro, it correct the frequency response and give you more details in the songs but can't match the performance of the Elegia. The crossfeed plugin Redline Monitor, will help to improve the stereo imaging on old jazz albums, on Elegia is not needed.

there’s no perfect recco, headphones (and speakers) are quite personal and always involve compromises. AirPods Max (APM for short) are actually very good headphones overall with relatively neutral tuning and decent detail retrieval. I like their low-end response quite a bit. the only downside for me is that they’re heavy as hell and uncomfortable for 3hr+ sessions. a bit generic but I would give the Sony XM5 and Bose QuietComfort Ultra a try and see how you feel vs. APM. my guess is that you’ll find both more comfortable (mainly less heavy) and you might prefer the sound of one or the other. doubtful either will be higher performance, just different. I’d recommend choosing a set of tracks that you’ve heard a million times, and listening to the same tracks on whichever models you compare. if you listen to random tracks on each, you might confuse yourself rather than drawing useful conclusions. taking notes is also helpful rather than relying on memory. on the “consumer” side, I’m personally not a fan of headphones like Beats since they are tuned with a strong “smiley” EQ, tipped up at both the low and high end of their frequency response. that said, some people really dig it, so worth a try. on the “hi-fi” side, my personal favs are Focal Bathys wireless headphones. they are a notable notch above APM in sound quality and quite a bit more comfortable. the main downside is that they’re even more expensive than APM ($1000?). there’s a new Bathys Mg model that is a notch higher ($1500?) and allegedly better still. anyway, hope this helps a bit 💜
