idea: stop blaming women who are having fun on farcaster for your inability to use the mute button to curate your own feed

i do think some of the casts were a bit too cruel

that said, citing specific people beyond just the algo does make the feedback more…concrete. “the algo is rough lately” is vague — means different things to different people. 

“the algo is shoving these specific people in front of my face every time i open the app” is more tangible and then others realize “wow yeah same here.” as they clearly have in this case

but them acting naive or surprised w the frustration is a bit disingenuous to me tbh. if your casts are jammed in front of seemingly every person on the network every single time they open the app day after day it’s VERY easy to understand why people will quickly become frustrated. that’s the case whether it’s some new girl, you, me, anyone

it went from talking about the algo to hate on specific people real fast. i'm grateful any of them are even interested in posting on this app and sticking around.

algo can be tweaked, tools to control what you want to see can also be improved. but trying to chase people away for just being themselves is not fun.

there is still a too small amount of people here who are posting daily to make the algo more tailored to what you wanna see imo.

best thing to do right now is to mute and move on. maybe give them a chance later when the team makes some changes.

Mute button is not useful. E.g. I'd also love to see less of your posts and I don't want to mute you

oh yeah for sure there are dickheads on farcaster now too. 

the algo does seem to have very inorganic boost for specific accounts at times. 

@jc4p has more technical take on why the reco algo is antiquated. i’m not so familiar with what fc is doing

on muting: i just wish mute didn’t perma banish the person. i want a less of this in my feed button that is not also a cone of silence button

Honestly my biggest criticism is about who I see on trending as my For You algo anyways doesn't seem to work well. But e.g. on Trending I cannot put "Show me less of this"

you did not follow me for a while but followed back. did that not help with this a bit?

First of all hi. And I want to thank @pichi for sharing this thread since IDK you and dont follow you and have a pet peeve on being followed by folxs without interactions since I got bombarded MANY times after I got out of the second shadowban jail here and honestly I despise how those who follow yet dont see things to engage truly end up hurting accounts trying to grow learn and advocate for others on farcaster

That's how most things go, as I keep saying I know I’m far from popular and try really hard to be part of the ecosystem yet I KNOW I’m not everyone's cup of tea (as is everyone in life) yet I have had algorithm issues since I joined. Left the app once then came back to an immediate shadow ban and keep advocating for others and more equality in visibility, I have had multitudes of friends artists and my chosen fam leave this app for issues I have tried to combat. The spam culling was great yet most of those who I invited in left due to the silent bands which I still feel are in place even having a trustworthy label myself.

don't really think the "I see [person] way too often on my feed!" takes are criticisms of any particular caster or genre of content. imo they are simply pointing to the deficiencies of the home feed algo.

I will keep writing about it. I don’t think the answer is to bully the people who are being artificially amplified. Unless they PAID for it, they are victims of some horrible A/B experiment gone wrong. 

But we can all decide what gets our attention and mute what we don’t want to see and we can continue to raise the issue that something weird is going on with amplifying hand picked accounts and it’s clearly affecting the community and now it’s just bad vibes all around.

Sometimes when I see people complain repeatedly about the feed, I go to their profile and see how they interact with things. And surprise surprise. They tend to be interacting with stuff adjacent to the accounts they are complaining about. Not gonna name names, but, I have yet to come across a vocal complainant who hadn’t recently liked a post related to the women they’re upset with 🤔
