I think if you zoom out this would happen one way or another 

there is a story they need to sell to American people for a weaker (easier) deal with russia which Trump is capable to make to get a peacemaker badge without much efforts and getting US involved

if they took it privately, it would just delay the bigger disagreement

Zooming out: If we think from first principles:

1. Why should the US be fighting other countries' wars? 

2. Are we allowed to say "We've given you enough"? If yes, when? If no, why not?

The tone and line of conversation + the Ukraine not being included in their own talks is pretty bad imo

Ask the hard questions, but don't resort to ad hominem/dismissing a president in war while not letting him answer any of your questions
