The risk of politician coins comes from the fact that they are such a perfect bribery vehicle. If a politician issues a coin, you do not even need to send *them* any coins to give them money. Instead, you just buy and hold the coin, and this increases the value of their holdings passively.

Furthermore, there is deniability: holding the coin is, in financial effect, a linear combination of donating to the issuer and gambling. Hence you can intend to do the former but when challenged claim that you are doing the latter.

You can even hold the coin privately, and show that you are holding it to whoever; you do not need any zero knowledge proofs, you just send a test transaction.

This is all risky to democracy, for reasons similar to what I wrote in https://vitalik.eth.limo/general/2021/08/16/voting3.html and elsewhere. TLDR: the economic arguments for why markets are so great for "regular" goods and services do not extend to "markets for political influence".

I recommend politicians do not go down this path.

I do a mix of paper, kindle, and audiobooks. 

I think I probably spent an average of 25 hours per week reading solo throughout 2024. 

I’d love talking about any of these if you see one you like on the list. I also might try to review them one by one in 2025 if it seems like there’s appetite for that here.

Day one, review one: The Geek Way

It’s well articulated, it’s by an industry-adjacent person, and it’s pro tech. 

But it’s not going to surprise anyone already steeped in startup culture. 

It advises a four prong recipe for building a successful company culture:

- make data driven decisions 
- promote agency/ownership
- move fast
- be super open

If you’re looking at that and going “hell yeah” then it’s safe to skip this one. 

But it’d be a good handbook for teaching newcomers and outsiders. And it’d make a great passive aggressive birthday gift for a cofounder who thinks his “Steve Jobs level product intuition” trumps your “AB testing data”

Four stars for its type, a solid 101 on healthy tech company culture

You can adopt the attitude there is nothing you can do, or you can see the challenge as your call to action.
