Obviously the CEO of a beer company has an interest here, but this analysis of declining alcohol sales rings true to me. There’s been this running narrative about more health conscious consumer patterns leading people away from booze but I have long suspected it was about an addictive replacement, not greater discipline. Reasonable people didn’t need the latest science on the cancer risk alcohol poses to realize drinking a lot isn’t good for you. Staring at a screen is a lot better for your liver but i have a bad feeling about what this trend implies about human socialization and the broader impacts on our society.

My favorite bar also serves THC drinks. It is so nice to go out and not have to drink. This has enabled me to be more social than I otherwise would be if my only option was to drink alcohol when I go out. I can only put up with a hangover so many times a week.

I am fully aware alcohol is bad for physical health, but it’s possible to use alcohol in an almost medicinal way (e.g. loosening yourself up just enough to be more sociable with only slight cognitive impairment and exercising all necessary travel caution) Have you heard of the studies suggesting that light alcohol consumption correlates with better health and longevity because occasional alcohol is correlated with social interaction?

I share some of the same concerns about the risk of screen time. Having said that, I would love to see more spaces where people can socialise which don't revolve around alcohol. At least in the UK we are starting to see the normalisation of non-alcoholic drinks at pubs and my guess is that beer/alcohol companies are looking to profit on this!

i think there’s also a shift towards more vaping and cbd/thc infused drinks have eaten into the share of alcohol sales. these are seen as more socially acceptable compared to alochol.

That’s a sharp observation. The decline in alcohol sales isn’t just about health; it’s about displacement. People haven’t necessarily become more disciplined

As someone who recently lost his biggest photo client because of declining alcohol sales I think about this stuff a lot and I am 100% sure it has more to do with people in their early 20s having spent so much of their formative years during the pandemic. I have so many adult friends with anxiety about large groups of people and I know it has to be much worse for people who didn't have real social lives during high school. Add to that inflation, economic insecurity, dating apps and political gender gap no wonder people aren't going to bars as much.

It’s important to be aware of why a person decides to stop drinking. I partied too hard in college. I’d say I wasted some important years, but learned that I have too addictive of a personality, as well as how addicting alcohol can be, to realize that I need to go a different route in social situations than drinking. The aforementioned alternatives all carry pretty large chances of addiction. But maybe not necessarily the connections to cancer than alcohol. It’s a good time to just consider when you quit, if you quit, what you’re substituting with, and whether that can harm you as well. I suppose more people are finding it socially acceptable (I’d be intrigued to see if this is true at the university I went to… a pretty heavy party school) to not drink. Who knows.
