Sell a man fish, he eats for a day. Teach a man how to fish and you’ll get fishing quotas and overfishing, you’ll get bottom trawlers that destroy the environment, you’ll get gigantic ocean plastic continents that are the size of countries, you get general habitat degradation, fish that aren’t fresh and frozen for weeks. Up to almost 40% of all the fish we catch is fish we don’t intend to catch, it’s called bycatch and we’re doing it. Not to even mention all the unreported and illegal fishing we have absolutely no idea. Extinction events, we are the extinction event. Don’t even get me started on farmed fishing, it is a nightmare. Think industrial chicken farming but with fish. We truly are not going to be eating real fish in 100 years I bet. Probably for the best I know; but the consequences will be total and utter destruction of our ocean habitat and ecosystem

I’m not against fishing at all. I admire all around watermen and women who spend time and understand and respect the ocean and the ways that it ebbs and flows. I think spear fishing is great, and I think fishing with your friends as an activity is great. I actually don’t even think industrial fishing is bad in and of itself. It’s just more, sad. I don’t think it’s going to get better any time soon, and in some ways I do think it will improve, but to me the use of the ocean is like tourism. People think it’s someone else’s problem, when in fact it is all our problem. A true tragedy of the commons

I think I’ve told you this story IRL, but witnessing first hand the damages caused by overfishing and trawlers during my scuba diving journey is what made me become a vegetarian. I stopped eating fish first, and then realized that the same logic applied to meat, so I cut that out of my diet too. Never looked back

I hope that cultured meat / fish will address this effectively in the long-term by being cheap and palatable enough so that fishing cannot economically compete with it at scale. There are a few companies working on this: - Wild Type (salmon) - Blue Nalu (tuna) - Finless Foods - Sea2Cell 🤞

That's also probably at the core of my aversion to people that hold the "men should master nature" and the idea that we are the only ones who matter and should be at the center of the moral code. Maybe a little bit more consideration to Martha Nussbaum's idea of animals and by extension the environment/nature as well having some rights wouldn't hurt.

I believe that for many environmental issues that affect our planet, a point of no return has been reached. I don't think it's just a problem that concerns consumers, but more than anything the fear of governments to make courageous decisions. People adapt, if one day they told us that we can no longer eat salmon, we would accept it as we have done with many other things. The problem is the millions of jobs that depend on the fishing industry. Those are difficult to adapt.

People think of fish farming and think of clean open oceans, not realizing what a cesspool things are, they also use genetically modified breeds. That salmon you're eating from the market is a prime example.

Blockchain documentation of food chain for products, e.g. outlining the conditions and practices (documentation of exact chemicals, food, pictures, & vids) and and half the bad farming practices disappear over night. Don't see this happening but I know a lot of marketing goes on to combat this and a lot of people live in plausible deniability. Move food sources local and enforce monopoly regs and I imagine you'd get more people who care about their practices that can compete.

Its actually sad, we always think there’s a solution body somewhere but we should be the solution ourselves, individually Water pollution is at its ATH which in return would mess up the fishes and water bodies I genuinely feel the government should create stricter policies to help curb or at least reduce this effect
