I will continue to use an em dash in general wherever it may be appropriate to do so. I’m going to continue to use it regardless of what other people think. I’m also going to continue to polish (as much as I can) whatever it is that I want to polish. I want to live in a world where one does what feels right to them — regardless of em dash or not or AI

Not wanting to use the emdash anymore is the same energy as: oh the indie band I liked before everyone else is now mainstream, I better not like them anymore.

thank you and I love this. because fuck that shit. I recently wrote about exactly this—the narrow convo around em dashes as a “sign of ai use.” like, wait, we humans and writers were here first. so… what are we trying to prove and to whom? and why do we have to surrender the em d? use what you want to use! regardless of optics! the em dash is a GORGEOUS thing. a caesura, really. it’s literally in every single poem or essay I write. and in the poems and essays of many writers i adore. I know I’m preaching to the choir here. I just get so fired up about what is essentially self-policing as a means to both prove you’re a real human writing real things, and perform + virtue signal to others that you’re “doing the right thing.” k. stepping down from the lectern.

if you need to visibly change the character you're using to distinguish yourself from AI, it's probably because your content is mid

I agree with you. I wonder if the people who suddenly have a problem with em dash because of AI didn’t do punctuation in school?

lol all these people who probably had no idea what the em dash was all of a sudden have a bunch of strong opinions that they definitely won't forget about in a couple of months
