ah got it. then it makes sense - with chat gpt, product manager roles have gotten the need to evolve anyway. Much easier for even biz heads to get the first level of PRD out...

I've seen the product management thing apply to tech in general and the research thing mainly AI and crypto.

seen this in AI, but not so much in crypto. Crypto did not have a product management role tbh most of the times...

It's usually an unnecessary abstraction layer that adds bloat and friction to an organization trying to ship.

It has its uses, especially at a larger scale but the recent trend in having leaner orgs has likely shown that most can and should do away with PMs and other managerial roles.

Why do you think this perception has changed recently?

Especially since you could easily replace Product Management with Founder, don't @ me 😅

It used to be a strategy and leadership driven role that was earned through technical / industry experience, but now is filled with task and KPI managers.

Crypto never had product people (for consumer, can‘t talk too much about pure tech products, devxp)

I think this is because a lot of people are not understanding the interest of that additional management layer… but we’ll see who’s gonna win then
