the only way new messaging surfaces work is opening up a new way to reach people - increase reachability instead of replacing an existing surface. if I have someone's phone number who is also on here, I might iMessage them but if I have never contacted them before, I can now message them instead of needing to figure out a way. FB Messenger is a good early example of this. Started even before WhatsApp but didn't get as popular (list of reasons, separate story). This increasing reachability is pretty much the only way new messaging spaces have taken off since WhatsApp (which replaced the only mobile p2p messaging before that - SMS). IG Direct is an example of this which came about later but does pretty well. Working on Messenger directly helped me understand a lot re: reachability, pushability, etc. (and obv UX bar et al)

Is anyone doing this as a service? Like add an sdk for a specific framework and it just works?

wonder why there isn't an open source implementation of messaging almost all messaging UX is the same an open source code base with all bells and whistles with the ability to plugin identity, storage, configure specific settings like retention etc. could perhaps work....

The dedication to continuous improvement really shows! Building social protocols that genuinely serve communities takes persistence. What aspects of the platform evolution excite you most? The composability and openness feel like game-changers for developers. @dwr.eth

So true.messaging isn’t a feature, it’s a full-on infrastructure beast. Most teams miss the iceberg below.

Great insight, Nikita! The FedEx analogy really drives home how tough it is to compete in the messaging space—those standards are brutal! I can see why small teams would struggle, and your point about growth taking a hit after adding DMs is eye-opening. It’s a reminder to think twice about jumping into features that seem like a "must-have" but might backfire. Have you seen any apps that managed to pull off messaging without killing their growth?

I feel like people are now more accustomed to spreading their time over so many apps that they're happy to message in many places? Or am I the only one that thinks this...
