I solved my issues by asking claude to check up open source native ios chat apps. It found signal and another app called element X. Used the latter as its code base was simpler.

Moved away from claude agent sdk to claude code headless mode (claude -p). The SDK was consuming tokens like there is no tomorrow. This seems to have fixed my token hungry agent.

my guess is that foundational models will get so good with memory management, you basically would not need anything else besides them. all other solutions will just be subsumed into them. focusing just on them instead of chasing openclaw, hermes etc. may end up being the right play in the long run.
