I lived in the same Brooklyn apartment for 18 years and as an early gentrifier to the neighborhood I tried to go out of my way to be invisible. I have parties, I didn't bother anyone, I didn't take many photos within the five block radius of my apartment. I didn't really talk to anyone because my spanish sucks and I could sort of see the way people looked at me, especially when I was in my 20s. Despite technically being Williamsburg, my little pocket somehow seemed walled off from the gentrification of the surrounding neighborhoods. About ten years in to me living there, things started to change. A few large apartment buildings opened up on the outskirts of the neighborhood and then the huge hole where all the stray cats lived across from my building finally became apartments. Around 2015 my apartment building was purchased by Robert Durst to hide his money from the civil lawsuits brought by his murder victims. 1/2

This is my former neighbor Elisa. We lived across the hall from each other for 18 years. She has some sort of mental disability and lived with her mom, but when her mom died her nephews moved in (because of the stabilized rent) and were awful to her and causing all sorts of problems in the building. Fortunately another family member was able to get them out of there and now lives with her and takes care of her. I used to get a lot of delivery packages before that was a super common thing to do and my neighbors were always stealing them so Elisa started taking them in for me and would basically make me pay her to get them back. It actually was a pretty useful service and once she came over to tell me that she bought earrings with the money I gave her which was pretty sweet. (Story continues below...)

A spread from my book Dinner With Igor where I photographed everyone I ate with for 7 years. All these photos were taken at Kellogg's Diner, which for a long time was the only late night spot in my neighborhood.

It’s summer 2009 and Williamsburg Brooklyn is still a “cool” place to live. I photographed Girl Talk on the waterfront that’s now Domino Park. One of the last gasps of hipster rule of the area. https://www.drivenbyboredom.com/2025/04/30/girl-talk-jelly-nyc/
