A place to talk about software products and the craft of building them

Why aren't there more compelling "consumer" crypto "apps"? 1. Up until recently, blockspace was expensive and slow. In the last year, that's no longer the case. Also embedded wallets / smart contract wallets / Passkeys will continue to make it straightforward to make any crypto app aware. On-ramp APIs are also much better (but still the largest point of friction for a pure consumer app). 2. It's 2024 — the consumer web is 30 years old and the modern smartphone era is almost 20 years old. Internet software is a mature industry. Obvious ideas (regardless of whether they involve crypto) are solved. 3. So if it's an existing idea + crypto, you usually getting, at best, a 10% improvement. It's not a 10x improvement. And if it's not 10x, you won't really get people many people to switch. (And for the last 2 or so years, crypto's brand association has been more negative, so if anything it's made a product overall worse from growth standpoint.) https://danromero.org/significantly-worse-or-non-existent.html

Casting less because I’m spending the day thinking about growing two consumer crypto and AI apps.

Is the /product channel grooving more to the beat of grand product vision and strategy, or the intricate rhythm of specific features and user experience? Check the vibe:

Hey! I’m building a new AI tool called Jules. It delivers your reminders by a brief phone call 20 minutes before they matter. Could you try it and tell me what you think? Super quick setup, no app needed. Appreciate any feedback! https://www.heyjules.app/

Social apps should not be apps but matchmaking agents through messaging apps.

Some insight in terms of what I think/believe about building good products. (Perspective, I’m an early user of many early products) App is very well designed, beautiful and smooth, wild for size of the team. I don’t consume there. I simply send, swipe around, and leave most times. Other app, I don’t spend much time there nor do I consume, yet. I expect to be a DAU consumer but feels hard for me to do so today. Only because an app is building for ABC experience, and does ABC well, if the movements within the environment feel “off” (UI/UX) than users will still churn because there is a disconnecting experiencing happening that most won’t be able to explain, nor will they know how to tell you why they churn. There is a very important connection between a conscious and unconscious experience, even if it’s all digital.

before making it big, Blackberry relied on wooden prototypes of their “Leapfrog” device to convince buyers of its potential it was a pager with email basically don’t always need all the bells and whistles in early products to get the ball moving
