For many years I lived & worked around Hope BC, the town where First Blood (Rambo 1) was filmed (serving as the stand-in for Hope WA 🇺🇸 in the movie).
Just stumbled upon this YT video about the movie and was reminded about what a really powerful film it is, & the message it contains.
At its heart, First Blood isn’t a celebration of violence.
It’s a tragedy about a traumatized veteran, failed by the country that sent him to war, then harassed, humiliated & brutalized by authorities meant to protect people. The violence escalates because those with power refuse to see the hurting human being in front of them.
The film came out in 1982. 44 years later we’re still watching its themes play out: police brutality turning vulnerable people into targets, people living with wounds from war no one can see, & systems answering trauma with force instead of care.
Movies age.
A message like this shouldn’t still feel so current.
But it kinda does.
