childhood memories
In France, we had a TV show « the Club Dorothée » where they aired many anime, including truly excellent classics like Sailor Moon, Ranma ½, and Captain Tsubasa (known in French as Olive et Tom). They also broadcast Dragon Ball Z, Saint Seiya (Les Chevaliers du Zodiaque), City Hunter (Nicky Larson), Ken le Survivant (Hokuto no Ken), Maison Ikkoku (Juliette je t’aime), Kimagure Orange Road (Max et Compagnie), Cat’s Eye, Goldorak, and Albator.
But after about ten years on air, it launched in 1987 and ended in August 1997, the show was controversially cancelled. One prominent political figure, Ségolène Royal, publicly denounced the program for airing “too much violence” especially in some anime like Ken le Survivant and Dragon Ball Z.
The cancellation was also influenced by pressure from the CSA and internal shifts at TF1.
To be fair, there was probably a legitimate conversation to be had about regulating the level of violence children were exposed to on television. However, using political influence to pressure broadcasters and ultimately lead to the cancellation of the entire program feels excessive in retrospect. Instead of working towards moderation or guidance, the decision led to the disappearance of a show that was both formative and beloved for an entire generation 4 replies
