I used to be under the impression that true meditation is only a state of zero thoughts (achieved through sitting in a lotus pose 🤭). So every time I was doing guided meditation, or just observing my thoughts or feelings in the body, I thought it didn't really count. But recently I've had an epiphany... First of all, who's counting?? Secondly, meditation is just a word. It can mean whatever I need it to mean for me. And that just opened a new world for me. Like, I can do an imaginative relaxing activity any time I need, to work through something that's bothering me, or for an insight? How fun is that??

I used to believe that if I missed a day of meditation I had failed, and that would lead me to not meditate for weeks or even months early on. Now, I just see myself as someone who missed a day of meditation, and there's no better time to get back to it than today.

It's the time of year where I once again attempt to make meditation a consistent part of my life (this is probably the 5th time). Looking for support and guidance. What made it suddenly stick for you?

If you meditate and want to clear your mind, I highly recommend meditating in a different language. When I “switch” my mind to a language I’m not fluent in, my thoughts don’t run away because I don’t speak Spanish/German well enough. I’ve had 1-2 min stretches with 0 thoughts

Sitting down to meditate you might get caught in the idea that you need to fix something - that something is wrong and meditations job is to produce a certain state. Instead, it can be helpful just to be curious about where attention is at any moment and to gently return it to rest in the body if it's wandered.
