This more in-depth video from WWDC Developer Sessions about the nuances of Liquid Design language have changed my perspective on it. There are a ton of thoughtful interactions intended in this system like automatic opacity switching when over text, increased shadow when over other elements etc.

This shows though, as much of what you’ll see in the video does not resemble what they showed on the keynote, that what they had ready for demo was very far off from what it was supposed to look like. 

I hope they can deliver the necessary tweaks by September.

Well said. Interestingly though, I watched the Platforms State of the Union session (I get real nerdy with this shit), and during the Xcode section they were saying that this year developers will be able to use older versions to maintain the old UI elements but that the newest version will automatically add the new elements, and that future versions will only allow the new UI. So it’s going to be forced/automatic for certain elements

That sounds like a mess! Conceptually cool, no doubt, but the downstream impact of that will be significant.

There’s enough evidence by now to say that no matter how a design system is intended to be implemented, the majority of applications will misuse the system. 

The more complex the implementation, but less likely it is to be integrated as designed. 

I can appreciate the thoughtfulness and ingenuity of the design itself — nothing short of impressive! — even as I am a skeptic of how it is applied in the world.

That’s called a prejudice… the interface is gorgeous. You cannot say you hate it because you think it will be implemented badly like in the remote past

Poor execution so far has sowed fear into people who remember the awful rollout of iOS7 that bricked phones and took a full year to fix. 

Also for people with disabilities, this kind of heavy handed, animation and transparency heavy design can cause a lot of issues.

Still I think long term they will arrive at something most people will come to like. Only time will tell
