my biggest concern with people in tech who spend all day shouting on the internet is that many of them spend very little time talking to the people actually critical to society: doctors, firefighters, police officers, construction workers, mechanics, farmers, chefs, baristas, mailmen, janitors, retail workers, etc.

Almost all of those are poor person jobs. Why would a poor person have anything useful to say. Be so for real

Exactly … cognitive bubbles While on producing a documentary series about the transformation of a neighborhood in Montreal, realized how people were ignorant and didn’t care about the trajectory of the Ubereat delivery guy.

When I worked in the cattle industry, I often thought about how the ranchers I worked with don't share their thoughts on the internet in anyway. I found them to be incredibly profound and complex yet none of it ended up on the internet.

In a previous life I worked as an environmental engineer in municipal govt; half my time was air permitting and the other half was permitting for building department where I got to talk to all walks of life Service jobs are underrated in terms of gaining life experience, and not just that but it explicitly helped me revamp our entire online permitting UX with the help of our software team (they didn’t speak to users either lmao)

The people in my life who are teachers, baristas, craftsmen, government workers, railroad engineers, etc are my dearest friends Just about everyone else is a colleague When I shut my laptop I have very little interest in hearing more of the same self indulgent perspective on the world that tech has

I work in the retail sector, and one of the things I value the most is the opportunity to feed on all kinds of people. Every day I learn something new, and it is incredibly satisfying to be able to talk and work with people of all ages and backgrounds. Knowing different perspectives not only expands your vision of the world, but also teaches you lessons that are not found in any book. It's a constant reminder that there's always something to learn from others

i created a video call platform to encourage people to connect more after a few years, there's still immense opportunity for it however, i think we've all been weathered to accept the accessibility of great content (and conversations) because the algo hits us with pristine dopamine on demand the result becomes a focus on what do we want to talk about, with who, when and how -- stringing these together is difficult back of envelope solution is: creating content for others to async respond and promote events that maintain a ratio of roles to talk

it's a bubble. tech people move around tech people. also, a large number of people in tech are not exactly what you'd call social.
