i have mixed feelings on this

on one hand, she could’ve made $$ at someone else’s expense (she’s not really a “creator”, just captured a moment made possible by Coldplay) but she didn’t; it was just status quo social media

on the other hand, she captured a viral moment that unified the entire internet and gets nothing for it except millions of likes and tens of thousands of followers

Do they ever post publicly about how many people make that level of money? I assume it’s a small percentage like all the other platforms.

the first part yes agree, but frankly the latter part is not universally true. i’ve made $10k+ from TikTok and gotten invited to interesting opportunities with interesting people as a result of posting on it. same can be said about many users on TikTok — especially those who have made friends, learned something new, found a favorite product, etc.

TikTok only exists because of user generated content. But users don’t get anything except a sense of pride and accomplishment.

Maybe we need to dissect this further. Idk if we should be rewarding vitality for the sake of vitality, but there are definitely some subsegments of it that feel off. For example the idea that platforms do benefit directly from the eyeballs to it
