In a weird spot with Farcaster. On one hand I love the permissionless network and what you can build with it. In the early days I loved the connections you could make with interesting, thoughtful people. In some ways this still exists, but not in the same way. On the other hand, the need to grow and keep the network alive brings about all sorts of stuff I don’t care for. Yeah sure I could just not read it, try to unfollow, etc. But in the end the algo feed and rewards will suck you back in. They’re effective. I can’t say I like that feeling. An even more interesting dichotomy is that social is what you make it, but up to a point. Farcaster is better equipped than most socials to build your own experience thanks to its network. I could build my own feed with the people I want to engage with. However that only works if the people I engage with stay on the platform. If they churn due to the network changes, then what’s the point? And what about new people? There’s so many great people joint each day and with a narrowed client it would be hard if not impossible to find them, especially if they’re the minority in the feed. I know some have said the answer is onboarding more people who post interesting content, but then it becomes a chicken in the egg problem. Thoughtful people aren’t going to join if what they see is mostly garbage content. I do appreciate the efforts by Merkle to solve this problem by bringing their own “chickens” to hatch eggs, but it’s hard to say if it’s been effective. I could invite some normie friends who I know would be great users, but they won’t have the stamina to wade through what’s currently on the platform. I would much rather wait until more of this is solved than onboard a few of the only friends I have to watch them churn forever because they didn’t like seeing the word fappcaster or getting a token shoved in their face. That’s not normie social content at all. Will clarify that I’m not looking to argue, as this is just an honest brain dump of someone who has put a fair bit of work into the platform. Idk if it resonates with anyone else, and I wish I had more solutions than problems, but it just feels like where Farcaster is at. Few things I know for sure: - I will define my own experience - I will cast what I want to cast - I will look for solutions because I care

great take! i think channels and communities that are not dependent on a single algo and real estate on the farcaster protocol might help grow the network and give us a shot at curating our own social spaces on the internet.

Love all of this cast, and especially the final statement 💜 I've solved the bad content problem by switching to the default following feed. I might be missing out on new interesting people to follow, but I find them now and then in recasts, replies, followers. It's definitely a cosier vibe 😌

It's really tough to build a community which doesn't just become a morass as it grows. Perhaps sub-communities and niches help keep it manageable. How do you post long form content? I'm looking for a home for some of that which isn't owned by corporations, but me.

definitely resonates with me and totally agree with the weird characteristic of requiring stamina. I'm infatuated with idea of a feed of ethos and shared context of crypto. But my brain is constantly having to filter out the new tip token of the day, generic images, tongue in cheek "cabal"s or miniapp for the chance of seeing a post of any substance. And then current politics is making me realize I've prbly given online personas in crypto too much benefit of the doubt throughout the years. Its up to people like us to build, but wish there was a bigger focus on making it a more open ecosystem, rather than making this the one-stop shop client. Weirdly it feels the most silo'd of all platforms. The pitch of channels was "it's just a feed with any URL as the root". Would be amazing if there was a larger cultural push towards openness and externally interacting with the network. have external apps instead of "internal" miniapps, that all anchor onto FC social graph.

Totally get it. The tension between Farcaster's permissionless nature and the need for growth is real. It's like you're caught between preserving the platform's authenticity and dealing with the noise that comes with expansion. Your point about building your own feed is valid, but it's hard to replicate the serendipity of discovering new people and content. Maybe the solution lies in finding a balance between curation and algorithmic discovery? Either way, it's heartening to see you're committed to defining your own experience and finding solutions. You're not alone in this thought process.

I’m new here and still exploring the Farcaster universe. The only opinion I have thus far is that I’ve enjoyed the limited interactions I’ve had with smart people. I pay special attention to curating my content instead of just shit posting. I guess I’m trying to say I’m trying to be more responsible vs my loose canon attitude on X and Threads.

That’s the big problem with the rise of these frameworks - everyone wants to be the one building the framework So you’ve got ActivityPub, AT Protocol, Lens, and Farcaster. Meaning you’ve sort of got to be on all these frameworks that don’t talk to one another, and you don’t have the time to build your own feed or extensions on any of them

Good you shared, more people need to say what they feel like as a user here. Not just parroting and aping into whatever is the merkle announcement of the week

Honestly, this is the kind of post that reminds me why I’m still here. Not for the tokens, not for the algo hits for people who still care to build better digital spaces.

Balancing open growth with meaningful connection is tough. But your mindset, ownership, intention, and care is exactly what Farcaster needs more of. Let’s keep building the experience we believe in✊
