Europe, the Middle East, and parts of Asia have endured record-high temperatures, with many cities facing over 40°C (104°F) heat for days at a time. Hospitals have reported spikes in heatstroke, dehydration, and respiratory issues, especially among children and the elderly. Cities lacking green infrastructure are especially vulnerable, with the “urban heat island” effect worsening living conditions. At the same time, flooding from monsoons and storms has contaminated water supplies in several countries, leading to outbreaks of waterborne diseases.

Gjirokastër, Albania – The Stone City Frozen in Time Tucked away in the lush Drino Valley in southern Albania lies Gjirokastër, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that few travelers have heard of but all who visit fall in love with. Known as the “City of Stone”, Gjirokastër is famed for its Ottoman-era architecture, cobbled streets, and silver-grey rooftops that glint in the Mediterranean sun. Unlike bustling European capitals, Gjirokastër moves at its own poetic pace. Its most striking feature is the Gjirokastër Castle, perched atop a hill with panoramic views of the valley. This fortress dates back to the 12th century and has served variously as a defense outpost, prison, and military garrison. Today, it houses a weapons museum and hosts the National Folklore Festival every five years—an explosion of Albanian music, dance, and costume.
