luxury industry is doing better than ever. spending is way up. Stanley cups and Labubus are distractions for the poors pretending to be rich in a hyperconsumerist world driven by the algorithm. real luxury is things and experiences you are so priced out of you have no clue they even exist.

Amen. A fren once told me: “Labubu became popular because of all the rich people and influencers putting it on their Birkin, so regular ppl that don’t have money for a Birkin can still feel rich somehow.” Bottom line is: it’s all bout trends, but real luxury is a whole different story, and I don’t think it’s even out there no more. Even high fashion brands make their stuff in china and they just sew the label in Italy so that they can still have that fake “made in Italy” quality

I still remember when Su Zhu was doing an interview in like, peak 2021 and was saying that what poor people don't understand is how much diminishing returns you get on renting high-end things. That like, you cannot rent the nicest yachts - I can't remember if he said it or if it was just a joke but it became recurring bit where we joked about the paucity of rented castles.

Adding to this is how millennials are the first generation to be largely priced out of home ownership, thus they don't have as much incentive to save money but rather try to live more in the moment. More product consumption, travel, hobbies, etc. And you can't forget the falling birth rates!

"in February 2023, a New York court ordered artist Mason Rothschild to pay $133,000 in damages to Hermès, for infringing its copyright in his 2021 digital depictions of the Birkin bag in NFTs." 😅
