Today I’m drinking matcha under the cherry blossoms in honor of @beecurious who taught me to dive even deeper into tea culture in Japan. It is said matcha tea has a deep connection with Zen Buddhism, as the practice of drinking tea was made popular by the founders of the Rinzai sect. In those days, tea was more a sort of medicine than a luxury item, filled with vitamins and even caffeine to sharpen the mind. After all, Zazen meditation can make us a bit sleepy at times, so tea was there to keep the practitioners awake. I spent the morning in meditation and now it’s time to relax and enjoy the caffeine.

You definitely know more about Japan than I do as a Japanese.

Was on a tour of the Imperial Palace last year and was surprised when the guide said that the Emperor and Empress probably prefer English tea over the traditional Japanese tea ceremony. But then realized that kind of makes sense given the history of how it evolved. You learn something every day..
